Thanks for your comments. They were terrific and brought back so many wonderful memories, especially as Beijing has gone from blue, sunny skies to dark grey skies and freezing temperatures again.

Hi, I have been following it on the news but I am glad you are keeping us updated. How terrible is all of this. We have wild fires in North America usually in California but I don't remember there being such a loss in human life. Of course, just on…

HI Emily, Thanks for sharing with us about your trip home. I wondered how you guys were going to survive that long, long flight. I didn't leave until 1:00 AM Thursday morning and was exhausted so I put the sign on my seat to not be disturbed and s…

Heather, you'll find the six podcast selections on my page here: under the MUSIC player - the level of sounds in the bus with the singing and the sight-seeing was sadly too distorted to be editable. That's a lesson for the future: automatic gain control...

thats sound like a very interesting last few days!! Yes luck is what I need at the moment. I am so used to being in Qatar that being back home and at school things are a bit strange. We came home to a 48 degree day. Hot compared to Qatar!!

Hey Heather!
Thanks for capturing the spirit of the dunes in your pics and video - especially my noble silhouette which I thought wasn't going to last the event, even less my camera...
Getting late postings like this (or really late, in the case of Anne) is like finding another chocolate in the bottom of the box we thought we'd finished, extra pleasure and strong reminders of what we experienced in this flat world out of time. We were there in this one world moment!

Hi Heather, I'm like you, I have lots more photos but haven't uploaded them as yet. It took me well over 24 hours to get home and then I started my new job on Friday and then this weekend have been moving into my townhouse. We have had the most incredible weather here with days over 44C (120F). It is apparently the hottest week of hot weather here in Victoria on record. I hope the kids will cope tomorrow with the heat on their first day back at school. Most schools are airconditioned especially up in my area. But even so it will be very unpleasant for them. Good luck on your first day back and yes, let's keep in touch.

Thanks - its always pleasing to hear positive comments - I'm positive the girls enjoyed it. As I write this Heather, I am patiently awaiting the arrival of Anne and the girls at my house! It is 39 degrees here today and getting hotter - it will be a shock for them.

What are you wanting to accomplish by attending the conference, in person or virtually?
One of my goals for my class (Grade 4/Year 5) is to participate in an online collaborative project. I have read about many but am always to hesitant to participate. Following the blogs of Vicki and Julie have led me to follow Flat Classroom and the work that is happening. After hearing Julie speak at the Learning 2.0 Conference in Shanghai I wanted to learn more. I am aware that the focus of Flat Classroom is a higher level but I know that the same principles can apply to a lower grade level. I want to learn how to do it and be able to come back to the school and continue to be a leader in developing authentic (I like that word) learning using IT.

Reflections of the Flat Classroom Experience

It has taken me a while to recover from jet lag and get my thoughts together. Unlike many that I met at the conference I am on Chinese New Year vacation and so did not have to go back to work immediately. Tomorrow, Monday, we will begin again so I figured it was time to focus on this past week.

It is hard to find the words to describe the experience of the Flat Classroom Conference so I am just going to comment on some things I learned about the world and about myself.

1) I,like many other wes… Continue

Something I am taking away with me

At the beginning of the closing session we were asked to think of just one thing we would take away with us from the conference. While I didn't share out loud the thought that immediately came to my mind was HOPE for the future. The students that attended the conference were fantastic and their vitality, excitement and belief in what they are doing was inspiring. They were asked to go beyond their comfort zones, make themselves open to critiquing by teachers and drive themselves to produce. WOW!… Continue

Xin nian kuai le

Happy New Year and welcome to the year of the ox.

While I am sitting surrounded by incredible students, progressive educators and new face to face friends at the Qatar Academy in beautiful Doha, Qatar back home in Beijing the celebrations for the beginning of the New Year are well on their way.

Last night the skies would have been filled with amazing fireworks and your ears blasted by the continuous cacophony of firecrackers and fire bombs. The celebrations to chase out the bad luck from the Y… Continue
