Press Release May 15, 2012: Announcing Flat Classroom™ Conference Europe 2012 and Flat Classroom™ Conference Asia 2013

Flat Classroom founders, Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis, are buzzing with excitement over the news to run TWO Flat Classroom Conferences over the next 12 months. Following the shared success of the last conference in Beijing, China in 2011 they are now delighted to announce Flat Classroom™ Conference Europe 2012 (Germany) and Flat Classroom™ Conference Asia 2013 (Japan).
On December 6-8, 2012, the International School of Düsseldorf e.V. (ISD) and on March 8-10, 2013, Yokohama International School (YIS) will host live Flat Classroom events that include a Student Summit and a Leadership Workshop (links to the 2011 for now). Schools are invited to put these dates on their calendar now and plan to be at one or both of these opportunities to experience project-based learning in a conference format.
The Flat Classroom Conference is a unique event that includes students and educators to envision the future of education as they use leading technology tools such as wikis, blogs, social networking and digital storytelling. The conference is diverse in participation while allowing smaller groups to work with leading world-class presenters in a "flattened" environment where virtual participants also join in the conversation and action from remote corners of the world.
This event is targeted to teachers and students of past, current and future Flat Classroom collaborations as well as Information Technology teachers and Directors and school administrators who are responsible for pedagogical development with curriculum design, global collaboration, global competency, and international mindedness in their schools. Essentially everyone involved in the education process, including students are invited to attend and actively participate. Educators will leave the conference understanding how to collaborate globally and with skills and contacts in hand to start projects. Students will leave the conference with leadership skills, technology skills, presentation skills, and a better understanding of diverse cultures and collaboration.
Director of Technology at ISD, Pat D'Arcy says, "We have participated in the Flat Classroom Project for a number of years, and we have found it to be the best model of cooperative learning and a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet and mix with students from all around the world in a virtual educational environment. We felt that a real Face-to-Face experience would be dynamic for our school population to experience, and are delighted to be chosen as a host school."
Head of School at YIS, James Macdonald, says, “On a personal note, I would like to add how excited I am at the possibility of YIS hosting a conference like this. I think the format is very innovative and I think this sort of model is something that we are going to see more of in future. I am not sure of all the benefits that our school will glean from this event, but that is also part of the excitement. I am very confident that with our team here, the facilities that we have, our IT infrastructure and commitment to the Flat Classroom conference, that Yokohama 2013 could be one of the most successful events yet.”

What a wonderful event! Thank you to teachers and students who worked hard and achieved so much in 3 short days. Here we all are in the picture with our purple Flat Classroom T-Shirts.
We are delighted to announce that, after an international vote, TEAM 4 was voted as having the idea most likely to succeed! TEAM 7 was a close runner up. Congratulations to all students!
See all details on the Flat Classroom workshop wiki.

Many thanks to workshop co-leader Kim Cofino and lead teachers David Deeds and Rebekah Madrid, and to Violet Lindsay for facilitation and media collection as well.
A big thank you to the American School of Bombay for hosting the conference, and also a big thank you to Think Global School for their support and to Pearson in India…

The Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference runs March 15-17 in Second Life. Here's the master schedule:
My presentation, "Best Practices Showcase: 3D Virtual Worlds in (K-12/International) Schools," will take place in the Main Auditorium March 15 at 8 PM Second Life/Pacific Standard Time. Folks outside the USA should note that Daylight Savings Time took effect last weekend, so check those time zones. California is now UTC -7 versus -8.
I've got my presentation uploaded to SlideShare:

Please excuse the typos! I finished this late last night. ;)
Hope to see you at the conference!

Wonderful experience and exciting results. I look forward to seeing some of the projects prototyped...so many good ideas. This was the third time we've brought Stonehill students to the conference and each time the student teams become even more impressive in their ability to quickly bond, brainstorm and build.
I made a short movie of the Mumbai Flat Classroom experience that our 4 students had:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n8J4wmWFRs
(Note: The music is a track from the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire - that I legally purchased - and which is set in Mumbai. To me, it embodies the hope of possibilities)
And of all the photos I took, this is my favorite...students from schools in India and China...whose home countries also include Singapore and the United States...who met only 3 days before...who worked together and became good friends at the same time they were working for their own individual teams...so big an accomplishment in so little a time...a microcosm of what we hope for in the larger geopolitical world...well done everyone :)

FEBRUARY 24th (DAY 2) FLAT CLASSROOM REFLECTION
My second day was a little different from what I had expected. The day started by a blog reflection on the previous day, and then we parted with our group members to start our next phase of the project, which was to create a story board presentation. The aim for this is to present to the audience, how we would comprise a movie (or commercial) to promote our project, using story boards. This phase will reveal to the audience, our time management skills, collaboration skills, and presentation skills. It was challenging to create a full presentation on how we would present our movie, in just two hours. We knew the theme of our movie (the design layout) but it was hard for my team members to draw the story boards in short time, and it was hard for me to create the movie presentation in very limited time. We knew how to persuade the audience by speech because of yesterday's pitching, but it was hard to organize them into orders. We also went to field trips before this presentation work. I went to ASB and a student there (who I met in the scavenger hunt and who also attends to the flat classroom) showed us around the school. We went around to take photos (which I will upload later). Today, I am nervous about the voting results for the top 4 (which I think we will not get chosen because we couldn't do our best work due to the limited time).

Yestday was a fun day and we had in the morning workshops, where i entered a 3D world for the first time. The after-noon was quite stressful since we had to start the storyboard for our final project but at the same time make another pitch, which we had to present in front of everboy.
but all went fine :)

SO let me make this short and quick before my net gives up on me again, so yersterday was AWESOME. My group was epic, and i actually think we stand a chance to get through. the pressure was really too much sometimes like when we went against the deadlines and stuff. so yes all in all great day , uber amount of pressure and just pure anticipation.!
Let day 3 commence

The second day of classroom was quite interesting. Splitting up into three groups was quite entertaining because we got to spend time in smaller groups and explore different ways of communicating a story. But the most interesting part was making the storyboard for our final advertisement. It was challenging yet fun to create a brand new video on paper. Ultimately I was proud of my group for coming together and getting the job done in a couple of hours.

Today is day 3, which is the last day of the conference. I have made a lot of good friends adn met some really good people, and i am going to be sad when we leave each other and go back to our schools.
We made our story board and presented it to the audience by the means of power point which we will be developing it into a movie.
Yesterday, when we had to bring up a good presentation and make our product clear to the audience in hours of preparation and prepare a min speech, was challenging but we did it !!! hooray!!!
We worked really hard and we are happy with our project and i pray with all my heart that we get selected.
i am really excited to know the results and i'm waiting for 9 am. :)

The second day was full of a hell lot of work; real work and also quite some trepidation. In the morning, again meeting my group members, talking more openly to them than I was in the first day was fun, we were more open and friendly with each other, spoke out our ideas more openely and really enjoyed ourselves!
The day started with the blogging of the previous day reflection, then doing two out the three tasks (I did the Technology and the Photography one) was again something that was really a cool experience and getting to know about our host school, playing foosball, clicking photos and relating them to some kinds of issues and stories was fun as well as something that gave me a hell lot of exposure!
After doing our animated pitch, getting to know about the best four is curiousity at its highest but yeh, a few minutes left!
Overall, anxiety getting the better of me, im really awaiting the decision and yes, Flat Classroom's Awesome! ;) :)
