Post flat classroom conference in Mumbai reflection - reasons for digital optimism

I read Heather and Marie's post conference reflections with great interest and agree with their views that despite the practical challenges and in some cases even because of them, virtual participation in the flat classroom workshop in Mumbai was a rich and valuable experience.

Mumbai: Post ramblings

I had a phone call from a publisher as I was heading out of school last Friday who wanted to know if I would be interested in writing for them. My answer was an easy negative. I advised the publisher that there was a common term entitled "time poor". If he was to switch the word 'poor' with the word 'poverty', he'd get the idea. With that in mind, I have jotted down a few ramblings that may not have been mentioned by others from the few days in Mumbai.

A week later...

...and this Flat Classroom Conference is still on my mind! What an impressive process in which to observe and virtually participate. My thoughts are still spinning around a bit and not quite congealed, but I have a number of 'take aways' to record.

  • Distance does not need be a barrier to those who are motivated and willing to work beyond the norm.

  • Communicating asynchronously in different time zones for an intense and time-driven project is challenging.

  • Grassroots e

Ethan's Reflective Blog Post

While we were in Mumbai I learned very much wether it be about other peoples culture or just new technology and different ways of thinking. The thing that taught me the most or shocked me the most was when we went to live with our host family. I learned that half way around the world people are not so different than Americans. They dress the same, socialize in the same ways, hangout with friends just as we would in America.

Another great shocker right off the bat was the drivi

Attending Virtual

Last year I was able to be a face to face participant in Doha, Qatar and it was a wonderful experience. This year the conference and Chinese New Year did not coincide and so I became a virtual participant.. It was a unique experience and one in which I hope to be able to gain more experience.

Once I wrapped my mind around the fact that I was actually a participant in the conference and not just… Continue

Home in Beijing....starting some serious review, reflection and making sense of what we did

The BISS contingent arrived home to Beijing this Sunday afternoon to another determined onslaught of fireworks, and then it snowed again this afternoon!
Students are worn out.....not to mention their teacher here.....but I have made a short Animoto to be played at my Monday morning stand-up whole school staff briefing tomorrow. Thought I would share this with you! The students and I have had some discussion about hosting the conference next year, Continue

My virtual experience

I felt fortunate to be working with Team6. I missed their work on the first day due to my actual work schedule but on the second day I jumped in and they shared their pitch slideshow which they were completing and asked for feedback. I was so impressed with their “first draft” in terms of the quality of the idea, how they presented it, the comprehensive coverage of their idea in the presentation and that four students who had met 24 hours before for the first time could collaborate so well. Beat… Continue

What a Tremendous Experience

This experience, or rather these experiences, in coming to Mumbai and to this conference could be described as nothing short of spectacular to me. I have been quite taken by the city itself and its residents, at least the ones I've met so far. Hospitality has been extraordinary. Food has been excellent. And my mind has been stretched out of shape, hopefully completely incapable of ever returning to its former dimensions.

As I consider the things I've derived from this conference, specif… Continue
